The ancient ethical will is a beautiful tool for those who don’t want their legal will to be their only “last words.” Updated for a modern audience, the ethical will is a non-binding personal legacy letter (or recording) that is attached as a side document to legal documents. With roots in medieval Jewish wisdom tradition, the ethical will has been rediscovered by people of all ages and faiths as a lovely and sensible instrument for timeless communication of the messages and information too important to go unsaid or fall between the cracks of generations. In short, ethical wills are love letters. They are created in the midst of life, works in progress by their nature, deeply satisfying for those who write them and treasured by all who are lucky enough to receive them. Continue Reading »

One of my clients recently asked me, “How much has your portfolio lost in the market this quarter?” My answer was, “Exactly the same percentage as yours.”
To me, managing my clients’ portfolios in the same way I manage my own is a no-brainer. Employing the same investment philosophy in both cases is a matter of both common sense and integrity. If I believe in what I do and how I do it, why on earth would I recommend something different to clients than I would practice for myself? Continue Reading »

Friday, October 10, was one of the darkest days of my professional career. Indeed, that whole week was one of the most emotionally exhausting times I’ve ever had in my work. It was a helpless feeling watching the portfolios of my clients in a free fall, melting away like ice cream on a hot summer day, for seven straight trading days. Then on that Friday, to watch the Dow hit 7,777 intraday was overwhelming. Continue Reading »

Rick talks about the importance of talking to your children about money in this Washington Times article, titled “Making Sense of Dollars & Cents.”
Ann Geracimos wrote, “Where child-parent relations are concerned, Mr. Kahler suggests that parents ‘first take a look at their own money script and how they act around money. Money is the big taboo subject, so parents should talk very factually about what is happening. Even saying, ‘I don’t understand what is happening.’”
