Blackberry Blues

Friday, June 20th, 2008

I am addicted to my Blackberry. It adds ease, connectivity, mobility, and convenience to my life. I could not accomplish the things I do, travel as much as I do, and be as efficient as I am without it.

So when an employee of the Hyatt Regency Bonaventure in Weston, Florida decided he or she needed my Blackberry worse than I did, it pretty much ruined the better part of my week.

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

Gary and Joanne Goodrich, of Lead, SD, are past masters at traveling on the cheap. They have found creative ways to visit a variety of exciting places on a limited budget. In our April 24 teleclass, they shared some of their ideas.

Among Joanne and Gary’s suggestions were:

That’s the response I get from 90% of my clients when I ask them what they want more of in their lives when they retire. Except, as “everyone knows,” travel is expensive. Well, it doesn’t have to be.

Reduce Travel Stress With FlightStats

Friday, April 4th, 2008

If you travel by plane, I recommend you incorporate this website into your travel planning: http://www.flightstats.com/.

Let me explain why. Each year, my wife and I take a “couple only” vacation. This year, we took advantage of a sale on NWA to Germany, snagging roundtrip tickets from Rapid City to Munich for $525.

“Chickenpox Cruise,” Take Two

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

Last Thanksgiving our Eastern Mediterranean cruise was cancelled the night before we were to leave due to a case of the chicken pox.  We rescheduled the same trip for this Thanksgiving and crossed our fingers. At least we knew, if anything stopped us, it would not be the chicken pox.

The Hidden Costs of Travel Delays

Friday, October 26th, 2007

I just finished reading a front-page article in USA Today: “Friendly Skies Gone For Good? – Nothing upsets passengers more than flight delays, surveys show.” I read it during the 12th hour of another annoying delay in a flight home to Rapid City, resulting in an overnight stay, all courtesy of Northwest Airlines.

Anticipating and experiencing travel delays have become the norm for any airline traveler.

The Myth of “Stress-Free” Travel

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

One of my aspirations in life is to see the world. Both my wife and I enjoy visiting new places and experiencing different cultures. We’ve learned, however, that there’s a price to pay for those relaxing, pleasurable visits to the world’s fascinating places. It’s called “travel.” Being someplace new is enjoyable. Getting there usually is not.

A Turkish Bath - And I Was The Turkey

Friday, March 9th, 2007
The words ‘Turkish Bath’ never mean anything to me.  They do now.

Certainly, one of the ‘don’t miss’ experiences when visiting Turkey is the famed Turkish Bath.

The Case of the Costly Chicken Pox

Friday, February 2nd, 2007

How much do chicken pox cost? Try $530.67 per pock.
That’s what it could have cost me when both the kids came down with chicken pox just before our family’s planned European cruise over Thanksgiving. Even though both cases were mild (only 15 pox between the two kids), we cancelled the trip. The experience reminded […]

Past Performance is No Guarantee of Future - Even with Cruise Lines

Listen to Rick’s Column Here or Watch Rick’s Column Here
My family and I spent Christmas taking my daughter’s "dream vacation," a Caribbean cruise. I’m not much of a sun, sand, and sea guy, so my enjoyment of cruising is based on relaxation and good food. I prefer to select a larger ship that has […]
