It is also important to note that the Government’s solution to the “too big to fail” problem has been policies that have made these firms bigger. The US has blinked. Markets now anticipate a bailout next cycle. The risk today is that a U.S. bailout may not be possible the next cycle. At that point we would have a national security issue. And a national security issue is the ultimate trump card. I am as free market as anyone. But there are situations where a free market simply doesn’t work. The government has created that situation with the banks. We are where we are and we need to deal with it.
